KROB and City of Corpus Christi present sixth annual Mothers Day Celebration
Corpus Christi, TX. -- April 25, 2010The citys only radio station devoted exclusively to traditional Tejano music or conjunto will be presenting its sixth annual Mothers Day celebration at HeritagePark. The event, co-sponsored by the City of Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation department and Andrews Distributing Company, is slated for Sunday May 9, will be free of charge and will bring together several of the states top conjuntos in a day-long musical celebration that will focus on the role of mothers and parenthood in the Mexican American culture of South Texas.
According to KROB program director Bob Peņa, The role of mother in our Latino society is one that is revered and time-honored. Tejanos embrace the very special place these ladies hold in our culture. KROB recognizes this, and thats why we decided to again pay a collective tribute to the moms of the Coastal Bend.
Among the groups scheduled to perform are perennial conjunto favorites Leo y Los Dominantez , Ricardo Guzman, Jr, y Los Tres Ases. There will be performances by Tony Tiger Saenz, Boni Mauricio, and others. Food and drink booths will provide refreshments, and the radio station will give away door prizes, including TVs, jewelry, furniture and Moms Day goodies.
Conjunto music was born in the 1920s along the Mexico-Texas border, the end result of a fusion of Mexican norteņo music, American country music, and Czech and German polkas. Since their inception, conjunto groups have been anchored by the diatonic, button accordion, and a twelve-string Mexican guitar known as a bajo Sexto. Todays modern conjuntos retain that basic, original sound, while incorporating other influences to form the core of a music that has become one of the most vibrant expressions of a unique culture.
