if you didn't see the domingo show yesterday, watch the above clip.
We cannot let these people take our music away from us. i know this forum is puro conjunto (as am i), but if Tejano dies, so does Conjunto. two stations in alice have been bought out.....music is to be replaced with crap also known as duranguense and banda music. TO HELL WITH THAT. we need to get a move on this, man.
As conjunto fans, it is VERY important that we go and support our Onda, whether it be through buying their CDs (that we love anyway) or paying the 5$ cover to go see them play @ the bars, or calling in the radio stations to request every conjunto song in the book. as musicians, we can only put our stuff out there. it is YOU, the fans, the people, who make the difference.
Musicians, keep pumping out more kick-ass music. I am more than sure that the Raza is behind you 200%.

Vince i am behind you 100% we need to keep Tejano/Conjunto alive! It's in all our best interests that our music continues to florish. There is alot of hope though. People like you, Champ, Tres, Juaquin Chavez, David Flores, Mando De Los Santos and many other young artists that are hungry and working hard, give us hope. As for the stations in Alice they were both bought by Jerry Benivides owner of conjunto powerhouse KROB 1510. They plans are to continue KOPY 92.1 FM as is. Meaning a mix of tejano/conjunto/norteno. The plans for KUKA 105.9 FM is to make that one a Conjunto Station similar to KROB. In other words KUKA will become a FM version of KROB which is great news. It will be the first conjunto station in FM anywhere in the US! The changeover in format is due to happen sometime in early December. Ruben Cadena (92.1 KOPY) who is one of the best conjunto dj's around will make the switch to KUKA next month. Times are hard right now for conjuntos that is true, but our future is bright. Like you said the raza needs to keep buying cd's and going to dances, and just supporting the onda (tejano/conjunto) in general. Hangon folks help is on the way! Look for 2008 to be a HUGE year for all of us. Just keep working hard and keep producing great music, and the music lovers will take notice!
You know i just finished watching the video and on there i heard JV Javier Villanueva mention that both the stations were sold and were going to be converted to banda and i laugh because everyone knows both were sold to Mr. Benivides owner of KROB and a conjunto lover. One is going to stay as is while the other KUKA will be the first like Carlos mentioned FM conjunto station in the World! Way to go Benivides family.
Vince i think getting a FM conjunto station is a BIGGG leap forward. KROB has been a big success so far and i think KUKA will show the other stations that a conjunto FM can generate alot of money and bring in alot of new fans.
Ya i am looking forward to KUKA, i really am. It's a huge step. I think JV is just kinda pissed at being fired from KUKA in favor of more conjunto loving dj's.
I hear you Vince we got to fight to keep our music alive. I like what i am seeing from our younger conjunto's. I think that the young conjunto artists coming up are some of the most talented musicans in any genre. Help is indeed on it's way.
i work at a school.....its sad to hear kids say when i ask them what kind of music they like "I like duranguense...and my fav band is (fill in the blank) de Durango" and i'll ask them "you don't like (insert tejano band or conjunto here)??" and they're like "No! i hate that music! duranguense is the best!"
that pisses me off so much. and to hear their parents blasting that banda crap and duranguense doo doo all over the neighbourhoods. screw that.
Ruben Cadena to KUKA is going to be awesome! The guy totally rocks as a conjunto DJ one of the all-time greats. I think KUKA bringing him is a a huge plus already, and his huge following is a great starting point for the new station.
I know where your coming from on this one Vince. I think these kids are just a product of the music they hear around them. I think with KUKA doing things their own way, it's going to show other stations other program directors that doing something like conjunto can be success. I give big props to Jerry B. for haivng the guts to be the first to take this big step forward. We can't win this battle overnight, but we have at least our first victory and that makes me Smile
"LA TEJANA" KUKA 105.9 is on the air as of Monday December 3. It IS a FULL TIME conjunto radio station.
Obviously, we will depend on the support of hard-core conjunto lovers to maintain the format, and we look forward to your help as we get this thing kick-started.
