How can I say this without sounding egotistical (of which I am NOT). I guess the best way is to just put it in the words of advise that my padrino Tony De La Rosa did: There comes a time when one has paid their dues through a long legacy (40 years in my case). Tony said that it’s time that I learn to say “no” to penny-annie gigs, as he also had to do. I’m not comparing myself to the great Tony De La Rosa, but I AM taking his advice. I am blessed that I have a really good job with the State so I don’t have to worry about funds, gracias a Dios and thanks to my dad who insisted that I get a good education. Conjunto music is my life! I will promote it, support it, preserve it, etc. But I can’t go on the road, risking our lives, being away from our families, if it’s not worth it. Unfortunately August is a slow month for us, but in Sept, we have it pretty full in good paying private gigs. I talked to my promoter last night and he told me not to get discouraged and to be patient. He is working on some big performances out of state for us and he has all the confidence in the world that they will be coming through for us.
Since I am a musician and LOVE to gig, just like all musicians do, I am considering promoting my own gigs around the Coastal Bend area. Although, I can’t understand why peeps pay $10 cover charge to hear DJ music and complain about paying $7 or $8 for a LIVE conjunto band. What up?
