Musicans: Are the Born or Made?

I have wondered for a long time, are the best musicans born with talent? Or can any normal person be taught to be a great musican. My thoughts are that you are born with it. Yes you can teach someone to be a musican, but they will never be as good as someone with natural talent. What are you all's thoughts on the subject?

this is a very iffy topic....

i believe in both. if you have the right teacher (not necessarily famous or badass, just someone that knows music and can convey the ideas properly...i was fortunate), you can learn it. with the right teacher, your ear can be trained. i've heard of people taking 10 years to learn how to play the accordion, and i'm like wtf? you just need to find the right person to show you things.

if you have natural talent, it is easier to discover music (althought it may take you years before you discover you even have that talent). i dont know how to explain it, but this "thing" just kicks in, and you understand music like another language, easy.

but yeah, i believe both statments are true: music, as a talent, can be learned or come naturally. not on or the other is exclusively correct. anyone else wanna take a stab at this?

Well done Vince. I think anyone can learn to be a musican but the best ones are the ones with natural talent. If someone was thaught won't they end up sounding like their teachers instead of developing their own style? Look at the some of the best musicans ever like Tony De La Rosa, and Paulino Bernal. They were self taught, and because they had that special gift they excelled at it. In a nutshell yes anyone can learn, but the natural talent ones will always excell just like in sports. Anyone can learn to play football, but the natural athletes will always win out.

I think Talent will always beat hard work. It sucks in some cases but it think it's true. U2 brought up a good point, in no taught Tony or Paulino, they were just genuises in conjunto music.

i had someone give me lessons for 2 months, and after two months the teacher was mad cause i kept learning everything too quick, so he told my parents he didn't want any money, that i needed to be on my own cause there was nothing else he could teach me. lol. the next few years i spent developing my own style....so i didn't end up sounding like my teacher.  he only taught me basics/fundamentals, so the rest was up to me.

Vince is right, learn the basics, and then go on to do your own thing. I have to say that the best musicans are born, not made.

Everyone has talent in them, some just have more than others. It's true how come you get some football players who work hard and arent as good as a guy that has natural talent and never practices? It's gues they are built to play the game just like some musicans are made to play.

like.......my test to see if a musician is real (especially accordion players):  if you can go up on stage, all of a sudden, and the band is playing a song that you dont know....you can follow with no problem.  i'm not even talking about making your performance "believable."   talking about actually playing and knowing what you're doing, musically.  some "made" musicians cannot.  they are taught note for note, song by song.  cannot play by ear  :(  that makes me sad.

Great point Vince, a true musican can not only adapt but also thrive in any given situation.

I think the Great ones are born with it. Sure anyone can be taught but you can tell if you listen closely enough to the self taught ones and the ones who are taught note by note. Vince brought up a great point you got to be able to adapt when you have too.

whether your born with it or not, Nothing beats hard work.
and for those who think being born with it is all they need sooner or later the hard work will lap you.
My advice if your born with it or not, Never stop learning more about your instrument.

Maybe for some of us Vincent.
But I see a lot of so called natural musicians who don't think that they NEED to learn anything else , fall into a rut and just stay there. I see it amoung a lot of our fellow musicians right now.

It pains me, because there is a lot of super talent out there and fail themselves by setteling in their rut.

lol you cant be born with talent. love for the game is what makes you good. alot of musicians do this for money, and alot do it for the love of the music. good musicians are made being around awsome talent also. for example tony de la rosas musicians. cuatro rosas are awsome why? cause they have been around the best. all the years they were with tony you cant tell me they didnt learn anything. which is why they sound like that.

i dont think we mean being born to play an instrument right out of the box.....we mean more the natural ability to pick something up with ease, for things to click in the mind.

well yeah of course there are people who catch on faster than others. slow learners, fast learners. in the end its all the same. the real talent shows when the musician shows the love for the music the passion you know? thats what makes an awsome musician in my mind

In regards to vocalists.....I could never teach a person to sing if they were tone deaf. AND...
No matter how good you are......keep practicing, cuz there's ALWAYS room for improvement.... never stop learning and never think that you are better than anyone.
Competition is good for the pie and there's enough pie for everyone!
Excuse me, but can I have a slice to go with my coffee? Gracias! :)
Have a great day, mis amigos!

I have tried for years to learn how to play the squeeze box and no mas no...
If there is anyone in Corpus that's willing to teach me, I'll cut off my nails and try to learn once more. My son, Jon, also wants to learn. I have two Hohner accordions and one is a "Steve Jordan Rockola"! Must have patience cuz I'm a slow learner. I got the videos and all pero couldn't get it right.

Anyone can learn and play, only a special few will be great ya i think some people are born with tons of ability while others have to work their butts off to reach that same level.

I have played with alot of guys before and you can tell a difference between people that are taught and those that have learned on their own. The natural ones are usually the more creative while those that have teachers tend to do stuff more by the book. My advice is learn the basics from an instrutor then branch off and develop your own style.

I think all the musicians have to learn somehow either taught somehow
either by lessons, or by just looking at someone play,, after that
it all depends on the EFFORT that you put on your instrument,,
some guyz move on to be GREAT musicians,, others stay in the same
level all thier lives,, What I call it is "EL OIDO" if u got the ear for music
then ur definately gonna be a good one,, ive delt with alot of musicians
all my life including myself,, its just as simple as some guys got it and
some guys dont,, u can also say some guys are born with it and some
guys arent born with it,, however u wanna put it!!
Me, my dad started me off with with Las Mañanitas and Atotonilco,,
after that I never looked back and I never asked for any help no more!!
That was when I was 12 years old,, now im 27 and ive been in the
music industry for 10 years now,, I never changed instruments,, ive
alwayz been an accordion player!! and I alwayz will be!! There's been
some friends of mine that changed instruments along the way,, which
definately slowed thier process down!! thats one thing I dont recommend
to anybody,, there's nothing wrong with knowing a lil bass,, bajo sexto,,
and drums,, but definately stick to ur instrument!! Have faith in it and
someday it will definately pay off!!!

Talent is something god given, the few who have it are the ones that move on to become the big stars.

I disagree, I think that the Hardest working individuals, "born with it" or not, are the ones that succeed. You got to be willing to commit to something and everything you can to be the best at it, then market it correctly.

The one that works the hardest is the one that will succeed.

What bothers me about this genre is that a lot of my fellow musicians tend to settle with the level of musicianship that they attain after a year or two and don't try to get any better. I can say this even of some musicians who think that they are born with it, and believe that, that is all they need to become superstars and refuse to practice or work hard anymore.

I also get a kick out of the ones that think that "Well...Daddy's a musician, I must be too" It doesn't work like that either, Everyone has to start with a commitment to learn.
